On Friday, July 11, the Canorient came alive with vibrant colours, infectious music, delicious aromas, and the warmth of community as guests gathered for Canorient’s Desi Night. It was truly an evening where culture, families, and friendships came together to celebrate the rich heritage of South Asia.

The festivities began with a warm welcome from our lively MC, Janet Joseph, followed by opening remarks from the President, Florence Suares, setting the stage for an unforgettable night. Guests dazzled in beautiful traditional attire, filling the room with a spectacular display of colourful saris, elegant shalwar kameez, and kurtas that perfectly captured the spirit of the evening.

No Desi celebration is complete without exceptional food, and guests enjoyed a feast featuring Veal Biryani, Chicken Handi, Palak Paneer with fresh naan, and a refreshing Mango Delight dessert that quickly became a crowd favourite.

Keeping the energy high throughout the evening was our talented DJ, Edric Joseph, whose music had guests of all ages making their way to the dance floor. From classic favourites to energetic Bollywood beats, the dance floor remained full as families and friends celebrated together.

One of the highlights of the evening was the friendly Desi-themed competition, which added another layer of excitement to the celebration. Participants raced to match popular songs with the correct items in a lively team challenge. What began as a friendly competition quickly evolved into an exciting battle of wits, laughter, and enthusiastic cheering from every corner of the room. Congratulations to the winning team, who took home a delicious box of mithai to celebrate their victory!

The excitement continued with the much-anticipated Best Dressed Couple Competition. After anonymous judges selected the top five finalists, the audience eagerly watched as the top three winning couples were announced. Congratulations to the two runner-up couples: Natalia & Joshua Rodrigues, and Francesca & Jonathan Tellis, who each received a bottle of wine on their victory, while the winning duo, Trevor and Darlene Fernandes, took home a delightful dinner-for-two gift certificate generously donated by Clyde and Vanessa Almeida of Table for Two restaurant. The prize was the perfect ending to an exciting and closely fought competition.

Our youngest guests were not forgotten! The Best Dressed Kids were chosen by popular votes from fellow guests.  Every child went home with a box of chocolates, ensuring smiles all around.

Of course, one of the greatest joys of the evening was not just the games or prizes. It was seeing generations come together on the dance floor, hearing bursts of laughter throughout the hall, cheering one another on, posing for countless photos, and creating memories that will last long after the music faded.

Events like these are only possible because of the incredible dedication of so many people. A heartfelt thank you goes to our Desi Night Planning Committee: Jonathan and Vanessa Basten, Andrea and Darryl Fernandes, Joanita and Raphael Monteiro, and Edric and Janet Joseph, as well as the many volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes before, during, and after the event. A special mention goes to our young bartender volunteer, Jemimah Monteiro, who cheerfully kept everyone refreshed throughout the evening.

Thank you to everyone who attended, dressed up, danced, laughed, and helped create such a joyful celebration. Your enthusiasm and community spirit made Canorient’s Desi Night a truly memorable occasion.

As the music faded and the evening came to a close, guests departed with cherished memories and a renewed appreciation for the culture, friendships, and sense of community that make Canorient so special.
